Biblionef Netherlands started helping schools in Ghana in 2007. Biblionef Ghana was set up by Biblionef NL in 2013 and became an independent organization in 2014. Biblionef Netherlands and Biblionef Ghana work closely together on a project basis. If you would like to apply for book donations, please contact Biblionef Ghana directly. You can contact them through their website:  www.biblionefgh.org.

The mission of the Biblionef Ghana is to let underprivileged children in Ghana experience the joy of reading and the love of books, thereby giving them an opportunity for a brighter future. They do this in various ways:

  • Book distribution: Biblionef Ghana distributes new books to libraries, schools, and organizations that offer a service to children who are underprivileged.
  • Local Book Purchases: As well as foreign publications, we purchase books written by Ghanaian authors and published locally.
  • Training workshops: Two-day workshops in Library Management and Reading Promotion.
  • Translations of storybooks into local languages.

Completed Projects:

Bolgatanga project

In 2019, Biblionef Netherlands obtained a Rotary Global Grant to implement a large-scale project to send 8,758 new books to about 12,000 schoolchildren in Accra and Bolgatanga  during 2020 and 2021.

In 2020, Biblionef Netherlands, Ghana, the Rotary Club Thema and Edukans worked on the implementation of this project. Despite the pandemic, some training for teachers continued in November 2020. In addition, bookcases were delivered to ten school libraries and 8,758 books selected for the 28 participating schools. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, these books could only be distributed in the first quarter of 2021.

This was the third and final year that Biblionef provided these 20 schools and a Community Learning Space of the Bolgatanga region with books. In the 3-year period, more than 20,000 books were delivered, 20 bookcases donated, a Community Learning Space refurbished and more than 60 teachers were trained. This project has had a great impact in the region, not only in the schools but also in the community by redesigning the Community Learning Space which organizes activities throughout the year.

New and current projects

In April 2023 we started with a new project: the supply of books and educational materials for 15 Kindergartens and training of teachers. By providing these materials we aim to assist in improving children’s literacy levels.

Goals:

  • Numbers of books to be donated: 250 story books per school
  • Number of kindergarten teachers to be trained: 34
  • Number of children to be reached: 2000
