Biblionef South Africa (BSA) is a highly successful organization. Since its foundation in 1998, more than 1.8 million books have been distributed and an extensive network of local writers, illustrators, publishers, schools, libraries, distributors and sponsors who work together with Biblionef has been built. Biblionef Netherlands has supported BSA financially from the outset. Over the years, BSA has become less dependent on support from Biblionef Netherlands.

Biblionef donates new storybooks in all eleven languages to schools and children’s organizations throughout South Africa. These books support endeavors to improve literacy levels, establish a reading culture, and help create the suitable conditions to foster a love of reading.

Biblionef Netherlands and Biblionef South Africa collaborate closely on a project basis. If you would like to apply for book donations, please contact Biblionef South Africa directly: http://www.biblionefsa.org.za/

New and current projects

Funding to support 5 Primary Schools in the Western Cape area of South Africa. A total of 625 Afrikaans books will be donated to the five schools. Biblionef’s Project Manager will handpick the books to ensure that they are age-appropriate and relevant to the children attending these schools.

If you want to support this project, please make a donation under the name “South African schools”.

Funding to support 5 Primary Schools in the Pinetown District of KwaZulu-Natal with new storybooks and training for their Foundation level teachers. Biblionef aims to support five Primary Schools in the Pinetown District of KwaZulu-Natal. We will carry out the following:

  • Donate a set of books to 30 foundation level (grades 1 to 3) teachers. Each teacher will receive 20 books in the children’s home language and English.
  • Provide essential training to the 30 foundation level teachers on incorporating storybooks into their daily lesson plans.

If you want to support this project, please make a donation (Andrei, please put a hyperlink in donation to the donations page) under the name “South African schools”.

Funding to support 16 Early Childhood Development (ECD) Centres in Mfuleni, Cape Town. We will partner with Starting Chance as their early childhood development work in the area is extensive. Each Centre will receive 25 storybooks in the children’s home language. We will include a few English storybooks to further support the children’s language development.

Each Centre will receive seven educational toys, puzzles and posters. The toys and puzzles will stimulate the minds of the young children, aid their coordination, and help develop their fine motor skills. The posters will provide them with visual stimulation throughout the day. With the books and training support provided by Starting Chance, the donated resources will aid the children’s readiness when they start school.

Biblionef will place the books into a hanging library that we have specially made so that it can be used in any setting. The hanging library allows for the books to be front-facing, which is a crucial element for young children who are still learning how to read – seeing the different book covers displayed regularly creates excitement for when the next storytelling session happens. Children can also look at the covers to develop their imagination and create their own stories from the pictures on the covers.
